Mighty Acorn was a Web application service ahead of its time -- so far ahead, alas, that we never even got to launch! :)
The company was to offer a technology-driven, human-assisted service that gave over-burdened business people the equivalent of a personal assistant on the web. It was a great idea -- still is!
We raised $150,000 in seed capital and began architecting the application. The technology market was in full collapse, unfortunately, as we went out for additional capital, and we were not able to raise a Series A round, despite a fair amount of interest.

January 1996 — November 1999 (3 years 11 months)
I founded the first social software company -- Caucus, Inc. -- in January 1996. We raised $2m + in venture capital funding; we had great customers (IBM, HP, Merck, and many more), and a great team.
But, we also had many of the same focus, cost-structure, and growth problems that afflicted the first generation of Web startups. By the time the company needed to raise another round, the technology market was in full collapse, and no deal could be found.
I had left the company six months earlier; there was a deep division in the company about strategy, and my resignation was the best way to heal it. As it turned out, we might have done better following my strategy, yet it seems likely that the market collapse would have done us in all the same.
