Tim Waring’s Summary

I am an ecologist who studies human cooperation.

I study the environmental constraints and drivers of human cooperation across societies in hopes to help build sustainable and durable institutions through teaching, consulting and research.

I use quantitative ethnographic methods, experimental economics and ecological sampling in order to examine how patterns of cooperation between individuals explain how societies share, conserve, hoard and waste environmental resources. My PhD dissertation work focuses on the influence of social diversity and hierarchy on cooperative irrigation in Tamil Nadu, India.

In previous research I have studied the social factors influencing the control of an invasive rangeland weed in Sierra Nevada foothill ranching communities. I have helped to design methods and software for mobile experimental economics research, and have studied fundamental aspects of human social learning. I have conducted ecological restoration research in the Florida Everglades as part of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project. I have taught environmental science and biology using the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, and have studied and lived in Nepal and South India. I have ongoing research connections in Europe and and India.

Tim Waring’s Experience

  • Graduate Research Fellow

    National Science Foundation

    (Government Agency; Government Administration industry)

    2005Present (4 years )

As an NSF Fellow, I research the influence of social forces on environmental management. Specifically, I have examined the effect of cultural and ethnic diversity in Indian caste on cooperation and irrigation management in the mountain villages of Palni Hills, Tamil Nadu, India. The data collection phase is complete and I am currently working to analyze, write and publish the findings.

  • Human Ecologist

    UC Davis

(Educational Institution; 10,001 or more employees; Higher Education industry)

    September 2004Present (5 years 4 months)

I am a PhD candidate in the UC Davis Graduate Group in Ecology, where I study Human Ecology and Cultural Evolution. I am currently studying the influences of Indian caste relationships on environmental management, specifically irrigation.

  • Environmental Science Teacher

    Kodaikanal International School

    (Education Management industry)

    July 2001May 2003 (1 year 11 months)

At KIS, an international level school in South India which sends graduates to universities around the world, I taught the International Baccalaureate curriculum in biology and environmental science at the high school level. I also taught an information technology course, lead wilderness hikes and field trips, and organized the school's recycling and waste handling system.

  • Environmental Scientist

    South Florida Water Management District

(Government Agency; 1001-5000 employees; Government Administration industry)

    September 1999May 2001 (1 year 9 months)

As an environmental scientist in the Everglades Restoration Department at the SFWMD, I had two roles: computational ecological modeling, and ecological field research. Most of my time was spend helping Carl Fitz, Yegang Wu, Fred Sklar and others develop, test, and implement the Everglades Landscape Model (ELM), a massive ecological simulation designed to conduct virtual experiments on different Everglades restoration scenarios. As a field researcher I aided in many types of ecological data collection, and also designed and implemented a remote, automatic surface and groundwater monitoring system for the endangered everglades tree islands. My work at the SFWMD was funded by CERP - the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project.
