Life science growth agent and leader
Charlottesville, Virginia Area
Quite accidentally, I've been involved with starting and growing a number of life science businesses - both external and internal venture creation and management.
I am most experienced in (and most excited by) turning technology into positive cash flow by getting the technology to market in the best and most expedient way.
Market and technology evaluation, business planning, sales, partnership development, and ongoing growth management.

Key Genomics generates pharmacogenomic intelligence to guide key clinical decisions. We make and use algorithms to find meaning in gene expression and in vitro data. Our algorithms have been shown to predict individual patient response to chemotherapeutic treatments for ovarian, bladder, and breast cancers. These algorithms support a new generation of molecular diagnostics.
The company is based on research by Drs. Jae Lee and Dan Theodorescu at the University of Virginia.

Business development, licensing, and corporate financing among big pharma, biotech, and venture capital.

BioCatalyst International creates, grows and manages successful early stage biotechs around the world. We start companies, partner with existing early stage companies, and "import" early stage ex-US biotechnologies in several different forms.
In my "Catalyst" role, I built relationships with technology sources around the world, evaluated new technologies and venture opportunities, and licensed in and out new technologies.
My activities with BioCatalyst culminated with Xcovery, a kinase drug discovery company spun out from Scripps-Florida. As COO, I led all business activities, including pharma partnership development and venture capital discussions.

As a part of the Upstate team from the very early days, I held a variety of roles - from finance to marketing to strategy to corporate development. I started an operation in Scotland devoted to the expression of kinase enzymes for sale to HTS pharma customers and contract kinase screening for drug discovery. Within 5 years, the operation was generating in excess of $20M in revenue, profitably.
In later years, I managed the slice of the company that held this operation, and other segments of Upstate's business, totaling ~$35M, with annual sales growth in in excess of 20%.
(Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Online Media industry)
1999 — 2001 (2 years )
Led revenue-related corporate partnering activities with media and financial services firms for TMF. Priorities included generating revenues, site traffic, and brand exposure.
In addition to traditional business development skills, this position required an unusual amount of creativity, as due to the novelty of the internet, products were invented for partnerships, and partnerships were invented for brand names. Case in point: I 'sold' nearly $1M of branded guidance to a leading brokerage for delivery to their new customers, but actually had to work harder to sell the venture internally, as it represented a serious departure from existing practices.

Led and participated in corporate banking relationships with highly leveraged customers in the Philadelphia area. (Typically >7X cash flow.)

Completed credit analyst training and rotation, where I evaluated >50 companies for credit worthiness over a 1 year period.
