My focus has been on communicating technical information to non-technical people, and bringing the "view of the user" to those in technical positions. Some of my friends call me a "Geek translator," because I am equally comfortable talking with people with a wide variety of technical experience (or lack of it).
Along with Marco Cantu, I co-authored "Delphi Developer's Handbook." I blog regularly about technical (and non-technical) topics.
Professionally, I want to make a positive impact on my community, my co-workers, and my company's customers. I want to be a creator, and not a consumer.
Experience developing Windows applications in: C/C++, Delphi, C#, and VB.NET; experience managing technical teams ranging from 4 to 25 people; writing/condensing/summarizing technical information for a broad audience.
(Computer Software industry)
November 2005 — February 2009 (3 years 4 months)
I am responsible for managing projects at specific customer accounts, but also for generating "attack trees" (for security analysis), helping to design and define new product offerings, and for coordinating accurate technical information about our products to 3rd party certification agencies and system analysts. In addition, I am responsible for generating rapid-application-development prototypes, and investigating the viability of new technologies and solutions.
(Public Company; 10,001 or more employees; Facilities Services industry)
December 1998 — November 2005 (7 years )
Managed a small team (4 developers) in creating custom integration applications for 3rd-party systems.
(Public Company; 51-200 employees; Publishing industry)
March 1993 — June 1998 (5 years 4 months)
Editor-in-Chief for developer publications, including launching the "Delphi Developer's Journal" and the "C++ Builder Developer's Journal."
(Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Industrial Automation industry)
September 1990 — March 1993 (2 years 7 months)
Initially, I worked as a Tech Writer, but moved to a position of software development toward the last six months of my employment. During this period, I taught myself C/C++ and Object Pascal, and introduced some of these technologies to the organization.
(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Industrial Automation industry)
February 1988 — September 1990 (2 years 8 months)
I was responsible for designing, prototyping, and moving to manufacturing electronic scale equipment and accessories, specifically devices for the "explosion-proof" market (grain elevators, hazardous atmospheres, etc). In-house, our prototyping process included electrical design, initial circuit board layout, prototype manufacture (circuit board etching/drilling), as well as moving developed prototypes into large-scale manufacturing.
(Privately Held; 201-500 employees; Industrial Automation industry)
August 1986 — February 1988 (1 year 7 months)
I was responsible for generating "as-built" documentation for building automation system installations, user and engineering documentation for building automation control systems, and graphic design and layout for advertising and promotional materials (including 4-color separations) using Pagemaker, and various graphics applications.
