    March 1995April 2001 (6 years 2 months)

Created and developed the OPT-IN email marketing industry. Built a profitable company without venture capital, and within 5 years took it public. Company was sold shortly thereafter to SEAT Pagine Gialle in an all-cash deal, at which point I exited.

The traditional direct marketing industry resisted embracing opt-in, claiming it would hurt their industry. We countered by showing them that ethical email marketing was profitable, sustainable, and defensible. In my opinion, opt-in is the only ethical way to market, in any medium. If a marketing method cannot be sustained using only opt-in practices, I don't believe it should exist.

I developed the double opt-in method, for which I hold a patent.
