Co-founder & Director at The Do Lab Ltd
United Kingdom
I help to create the strategies, cultures, technologies and processes that enable ubiquitous communication, association and shared experiences. I work both from first principles about how people and enterprises can, do and could behave and operate in a cybernetic world and from the pragma of where they are right now. I help identify destinations, the strategies for reaching them and the roadmaps that set out the steps along the way.
I've been instrumental in the creation of highly successful, award-winning and innovative products and online services, with particular expertise in the creation of context-sensitive, targeted content delivery and the facilitation of emergent communities for online and mobile services, for corporate use, in consumer entertainment and for social networking.
I've been the co-founder of a number of start-up companies. These include: The Internet People, a strategic internet consultancy formed at a time when most companies couldn't spell "Internet"; The Digital Village, co-founded with colleagues from the Media, Entertainment and Technology industries – most notably my late and lamented friend, Douglas Adams – and now the Do Lab, an innovations incubator working in and around the technology-mediated integration of people, content, community and value.
Consultancy clients include The BBC, SAS Institut, Apple Computer, Intel, AT&T Labs, The Royal Opera House, The UK Government, The European Commission, Scottish Enterprise, Comic Relief, Mondex and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. I am author of various works on social technologies, identity and privacy. I am a member of the UK's Sustainable Development Panel and have a personal interest in the sypathetic restoration of historic buildings for low-carbon, low-energy living, in part to help balance my equal interest in the gratuitous use of fossil fuel-burning vehicles.

The Do Lab is an incubator for technology and business innovation, founded in September 2009. We operate in a diffuse orbit around the principle of Ubiquity – the technology-mediated intersection of people, content, community and value. Our approach is to help ourselves and our partners release their creativity and focus the results, taking a market-driven approach to the identification, exploitation and early-stage development of innovations in products, services and business models. Our first products are SlipStream (www.slipstream.tv), our social media platform – winner at the 2008 BBC Innovation Labs – and The Conversation Engine, an integrated collaboration framework and analytics environment being developed with and for a global resilience consultancy. We're also working with industry partners to reinvent revenue generation around digital content distribution.
