Tim Chambers' Summary

Software professional with experience in every part of the business: product development, process engineering, engineering services, marketing and manufacturing/operations. Specializing in software test.

I was a program manager for nearly five years leading and serving on global, virtual teams at a large high-tech corporation. I focused on increasing HP's sales of Linux on blades in a $6B market by building up the Linux and open source knowledge of a community of worldwide technical experts who consulted with customers and helped to close business. When our community started, HP was #2 in the Linux on blades market segment. When I left, HP was #1.

I learned computer science and engineering at MIT, then I made significant software contributions to successful products. I was shaped by the corporate culture invented by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. I strive to carry on their principles, creating new products and services that are so compelling that customers are willing to pay a premium.

Specialties: problem solving, UNIX, Perl, HTML, Linux & open source, wikis, social media, Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0, community building, knowledge management, technical event planning (virtual & face to face), leadership, fitting projects to constraints of resources & schedules, flawless follow-through, integrity, mindset that focuses on earning a profit by solving customer problems & controlling quality of new products, superior verbal & written communication

    Authors: Tim Chambers

I discuss experiences with SRE by three teams working for Agilent Technologies in Colorado Springs. After setting the scene with a brief explanation of the teams and a history of our adoption of SRE, I explain how we now use it. I cite some specific processes and techniques, comparing them to the formal methods taught by John Musa in his book Software Reliability Engineering. For each process and technique, I present data that demonstrates improvements to software quality, and I show how those improvements are a direct result of our use of SRE principles.

Presented during the 2000 International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering's Industry Day.
