I have been developing online content and community services since the advent of the digital information age (i.e.: since modems were added to personal computers, circa 1981), when I joined The Source, the first national online service for personal computer users, then owned by the Reader's Digest. It was a natural extension of my previous work in news and publishing.
The online medium presented something new under the information sun: the presence of reader-provided content in the product. More precisely, in the most dynamic and successful settings “reader-provided content” became the product. What we now know as blogs and social networks are all based on the medium’s inherent property of connecting people with common interests. My work has focused on applying that property to many business and organizational needs.
Most recently this has centered in local media markets, where traditional models face extreme challenges. My efforts have been geared to developing local vertical media, using web and print hybrid models and search-oriented, user-centric media that serve audiences and local advertisers alike. Currently the focus is on local consumer health and wellness markets.
Creating media businesses based on common-interests that is made possible by the technologies of social networking, community and advertising. Have started or been part of many new media ventures. I also continue to write.
