Stephen Wang’s Experience

  • CTO, Co-founder

    AliveNotdead.com

(Privately Held; 1-10 employees; Internet industry)

    December 2006Present (1 year 11 months)

An online community for artists (filmmakers, musicians, performing artists, and more) and their fans allowing communication, interaction, and collaboration. Our mission is to remake the way artists market, distribute, and communicate with their fans starting with Asia.

Teaming up with three other of my Rotten Tomatoes colleagues -- we all love Hong Kong movies and become friends with many great filmmakers, musicians, and other artists in Hong Kong, China, and elsewhere who we hope will find this site as a great new way to gain exposure here in Hong Kong and abroad.

  • COO

    Xiaban.com / XMFish.com

(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Internet industry)

    January 2006January 2007 (1 year 1 month)

Operating a mainland China city portal helping people find the best places to eat, shop and play. We also operate one of China's most active local forum communities with over two-thirds of Xiamen's online population visiting our web sites each week. I moved from the comfortable surroundings of the San Francisco Bay Area to my second favorite city of Xiamen, Fujian, China -- a wonderful coastal city near Taiwan where my two college friends had started a new internet business. I came into a company that had already been around for about a year and a half, but needed someone with my kind of expertise.

The fun challenge here was to work with a completely local Chinese team daily and redesign and grow a site from nearly scratch in a unique, but tremendously heated market.

  • VP/Publisher, Rotten Tomatoes

    IGN Entertainment

(Public Company; 201-500 employees; Internet industry)

    July 2004December 2005 (1 year 6 months)

IGN Entertainment, a unit of Fox Interactive Media, Inc. (acquired September 2005), is a leading Internet media and services provider focused on the videogame and entertainment enthusiast markets.

During my time at the head of Rotten Tomatoes, I helped grow traffic from 2.7M unique visitors in the month of June 2004 to 6.2M unique visitors in the month of January 2006 right after I left. We also launched great new features like the Certified Fresh label for the best reviewed movies and the Rotten Tomatoes media player to serve up a huge library of trailers and online video clips. We also conducted our first publicity tour of all of the major and minor movie marketing departments in order to expand our partnerships with the studios.

As a department head for IGN, I was able to be a part of the lead up and aftermath of our acquisition by Fox Interactive Media and ultimately departed so that I could get back to the exciting, new startup life, this time in China.
