Background

Summary

I'm a writer and activist specializing in women's history.

I started out training as a historian, but in my twenties I ran away to join the circus (as it were) and became a professional stage actor. In my thirties I worked in the finance industry, inventing a patented artificial intelligence system to mimic the thinking of financial planners (specifically, an expert system using multi-attribute utility theory and stochastic modeling). I also developed the first consumer software for Roth IRA planning.

I retired from the corporate world at 40 to devote my time to writing and feminist activism. In 2008 I helped launch three podcast programs, two websites, and one non-profit advocacy group run by Clinton campaign supporters.

In 2009 I co-founded Equal Visibility Everywhere (EVE), dedicated to achieving gender parity in the symbols and icons of the United States. Our early successes include the Harriet Tubman Statue Project (in partnership with Maryland NOW), which will see a special commemorative sculpture of Harriet Tubman installed in the U.S. Capitol Building. In 2012 EVE was officially commissioned by the Governor of Kansas with the task of placing a new statue of Amelia Earhart in the National Statuary Hall Collection.

In 2010 I founded the Real History Project, which is focused on popularizing a deeper and broader understanding of the past---the real stuff, not just the Dead White Male version of history. The plan is for a variety of projects under the Real History umbrella, with an emphasis on novel, easily accessible approaches.

The first venture from the Real History Project is Take Back Halloween, a costume site with instructions on how women can deck themselves out as the great women of history and mythology. The site is now a year-round educational resource, with millions of visitors, international media coverage, and a global following.
