Math Teaching Intern at Claremont Graduate University

Through the years I have rethought my career many times. As a college student, I planned to become a physicist. Then I studied Germanic Linguistics. In Denmark in 1972 this turned into a career as HS teacher in German and English.
After about 10 years of teaching, I tried the "real world," I initially aimed at international marketing because of my language skills.
For a while I ran a diaper service, developing the whole concept to make it as environmental sustainable as possible.
To actually earn some money I turned to temping, where most of the jobs were with companies working with sustainable energy projects, from district heating to windmills. I took courses in environmental management - and in graphic design.
On moving to California in 2000, I became a technical writer, which combined many of the skills I'd picked up along the way.
The past couple of years, I've been working to help people get solar panels on their roofs through an innovative start-up solar panel provider, Citizenre. I have also prepared training materials and other documents for this company.
And now it's time to rethink this career again. I've been seeing articles in the AARP newsletter about getting older math and science-interested people to apply their knowledge to teaching in California high schools through an organization www.encorpsteaching.org. I have started the long process of getting qualification. I've passed the CBEST exam and the first part of the California Teachers of English Learners exam, and now I am studying algebra, geometry, trig and calculus (among others) for the CSAT exam March 14. Wish me luck!

In the final years of my career I want to go back to where I started, as a teacher, now that I have acquired experience in so many fields. My initial intentions as a college student were to study physics, so I am coming full circle.
I am being helped along the way by the organizations www.encorpsteachers.org, which is helping California retirees become math and science teachers in schools with a high percentage of disadvantaged students.
Claremont Graduate School promises to train its interns for exactly that type of student, so it is a good match.
