How much of the web is garbage?

Knowledge and discourse are the lifeblood of democracy, free markets and progress, and now it all flows through the web. But the web is flooded with dishonesty, manipulation and junk information. Most culpable are not the obviously shady websites, but the big-brand ones that we all blindly trust, that have a huge influence on who we vote for, what we buy, and most importantly, what we believe.

First, we need to understand advertising does not make the web free, but much more expensive. It's not free because advertisers pay with the higher prices they charge us. It's much more expensive because we also pay for the enormous costs and profits of the advertising industry, our lost privacy, the opportunity cost of products that cater to advertisers not us, time lost on a web perversely incented to generate cheap, click-attracting garbage, and the social and economic costs of advertising lies and manipulation. Our only way out is to cut advertisers out, and pay for the web directly. The web would be cleaner, better and cheaper.

Second, just as we have ways to share good finds on the web, we need a way to share warnings to stay clear of the bad. This both protects users and punishes publishers of garbage. Everyone is working on being viral, but no one is working on what we need most: an anti-viral.

If we are to fix our dysfunctional politics, our screwed and screwed up markets and economy, and the rampant dishonesty that wins most fights, we must start with ourselves. We must be clear about what we drink from the stream and how we encourage more muck to get poured in. We must be clear about what we ourselves pour in. Our children are downstream drinking it all.

I am working on some non-profit solutions. When ready I'll make them public. I need co-conspirators. To start with I need someone who can write better than I. If any of the above strikes a chord, ping me.
