It is about time that Social Media was put to work for Construction. Stop tinkering around on the edges and get a structure in place.
After training in architecture, I spent five years teaching design and lecturing at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture and in the USA, and then 15 years managing architects practices.
In 2011 I launched a consultancy, Just Practising, which brings my expertise in the construction industry together with my success using social media in marketing these practices.
I now spend my time:
• Meeting and speaking to board-level construction professionals about how social media will change construction and how they can prepare.
• Advising construction product companies, contractors and consultants how to integrate social media into their marketing and business development, customer service and recruitment.
• Teaching construction companies how to sell to architects effectively and get their reps, support staff, directors and websites more effective online.
• Training in Linkedin, Twitter and Blogging, both in house and at public workshops and online through your browser.
• Making social objects including documents, video, live blogs, and adapting client’s materials to a more effective purpose.
• Showing you how to make money out of social media, instead of just being there ‘because everyone else is’

The Designers Network is a Not-For-Profit collective of designers from a wide range of disciplines who have come together to promote the value of design to business.
When the organisation floated free from its origins as a BusinessLink supported venture, I became one of its three directors.
The Network encourages designers from all disciplines to come together and share experiences, source training, support each other and help the business community use design to improve their bottom line. The Network offers presentations, seminars, support and expert attendence at events and also organises its own events. It is entirely funded by membership subscriptions and grants from regional bodies such as ExDra.
Responsible for managing a busy multidisciplinary practice.
Responsible for the development of new administrative systems that enabled efficient growth, systems including financial management, recruitment, HR, IT and compliance with legislation.
Full responsibility for soliciting and managing new business, client liaison and financial reporting to the partners. Financial Management, Strategic Planning, Office Management, PR, Recruitment, HR, Website and Premises. Facilitation of office-wide tasks including competition entries.

Managed growth of the practice by over 100% in 5 years, increased profitability, debts paid off and Partners drawings increased by 53%

Increased the active client base and turnover.
Managed cash flow through downturn in health projects, so that when PFI projects were awarded maap was able to capitalise. The company is now 20 strong and has recently opened a new office in Newcastle.
Managed the practice relocation to Charlotte Road in 1998.

Momentum+ is pioneering software that allows for a smooth transition of operations during key personnel changes. As part of a prestigious team of stakeholders, we are providing marketing and social strategic advice to the iHandover startup who own Momentum+
The Architect Map is a tool connecting members of the AEC community, from Architects and Engineers, to Contractors, Manufacturers and Graduates, who all share a common interest and use of the social media tool Twitter. Mark Schumann and I developed the website and iPhone mobile application which was successfully accepted into the Apple App Store. The Architect Map has gone on to win awards for the iPhone application and had over 100,000 views through the website.
