Shopping.com

March 2000July 2004 (4 years 5 months) Brisbane, California and New York

As chief strategy officer and head of corporate development, I helped transform this start-up that had innovative technology and a bold vision but no revenues into the world's largest comparison shopping destination and a fast-growing cash machine. As part of my role, I identified, evaluated and negotiated M&A prospects, including our game-changing acquisition of consumer reviews leader Epinions, and I helped position the company for its successful IPO and later acquisition by eBay.

I was a senior partner of this exclusive strategy firm, rising in the firm’s Paris and New York offices and then heading London and San Francisco, reporting to the Chairman. We harnessed fact-based analysis to help world-class companies define strategies that unleashed their full potential. I had the privilege of advising CEOs on the front lines of the “cola wars," the “snack wars,” the “art auction wars,” and the “tire wars,” among others, helping them grow sales, profits and value while cementing industry leadership.

David Epstein's Volunteer Experience & Causes

  • Volunteer Experience

    • President

      AIESEC Alumni International
      February 2012 March 2014 (2 years 2 months)

I led a global network of AIESEC alumni in business, government and academia, and I advised AIESEC International as a member of its Supervisory Group. AIESEC, the world's largest youth-driven organization, promotes responsible leadership on a global scale through its operations in more than 100 countries and has nearly one million alumni worldwide. Following my two-year term as President, I was elected to another term on the organization's Executive Board, where I serve now.

    • Chairman, Board of Directors

      AIESEC Life
      October 2010 May 2012 (1 year 8 months)

I worked with the Executive Director and fellow board members to guide this non-profit organization. AIESEC Life supports the activities of AIESEC in the US while also enabling thousands of alumni to connect, collaborate and learn from each other. I resigned as Chairman in May 2012 to lead the global association, but I remain a member of the Board of Directors.

    • International Executive Envoy and Intern

      AIESEC
      September 1980 August 1982 (2 years)

I was sent by AIESEC International to Buenos Aires to help reestablish and grow the organization's activities in Argentina. I then worked at companies in South America and Europe through AIESEC's global internship program.

    • Director

      AIESEC United States
      July 1979 June 1980 (1 year)

While attending college, I was elected to join the Board of Directors of AIESEC United States, Inc., a non-profit organization. I helped define strategies, allocate resources and hire staff while also assisting the development of local committees nationwide. I had the privilege of serving on the Board alongside senior executives and a former US secretary of commerce.

    • Co-Founder and Co-President

      AIESEC Berkeley
      September 1977 June 1979 (1 year 10 months)

My co-founders and I convinced AIESEC US to extend the world’s largest youth-driven organization to Cal. We formed a student management team, gained support from the university, recruited a large and motivated member base, and marketed foreign interns to local companies, thereby also enabling our members to go on business internships overseas.
