Chris Stewart’s Summary

Goals >> Coworking

1) Raise awareness of coworking as a viable alternative to the typical full-time colocation arrangement. I'm doing this by supporting Jelly! events in Dallas and forming a local creative community in Cedar Hill. For a great primer on coworking, read http://mashable.com/2008/11/07/reasons-to-start-coworking/, or check out my wiki page at http://wiki.workatjelly.com/Cedar+Hill+Texas.

2) Establish a dedicated coworking space in Cedar Hill, Texas (15 minutes south of Dallas) for freelancers and mobile knowledge workers who live south of I-20. Targeted for individuals typically working out of their local Starbucks, the space will provide office amenities and the social benefit of being surrounded by energetic individuals who share common values: independence, innovation, and collaboration. The business model will be similar to Conjunctured in Austin (http://www.conjunctured.com).

Goals >> Microfinance

1) Raise awareness about microfinance as a superior alternative to traditional aid as a method to help the working poor in developing nations pull themselves out of poverty in a way that's sustainable and scalable. In August 2008 I visited Esperanza, an active MFI in Dominican Republic, and saw first-hand that microcredit, microsavings, and group health benefits can radically impact poor communities for the better. Visit http://www.kiva.org for more.

2) Establish a tech. startup that will leverage the social web to shorten the virtual distance between members of the microfinance value chain. For lenders who are financially-motivated, we will provide transparent metrics to determine the quality of loan portfolios in an effort to help them manage risk. For lenders who are socially-motivated, we will work with MFIs to provide technology and process knowledge to their teams in the field to chronicle the stories of their borrowers/clients.
