The web didn't exist when I was at school, so it was hard to spot it as a career choice then. Soon after it become popular, I found it to be an excellent match for my diverse skills in technology, design and writing.
During 1999-2005 I worked with various web companies, developing skills in XHTML/CSS, as well as ColdFusion programming and database work. With a colleague I developed a CF-based Content Management System from the ground up, which was deployed for many sites, chiefly for UK government departments.
2006 saw me adjust my focus to work more with smaller companies and organizations, shifting to the popular WordPress platform. Our CMS was good, but I prefer the openess and developer community of something like WordPress - it's better for me and for clients.
I continue to enjoy straight conversion of PSDs into XHTML/CSS code, supplementing my flourishing array of direct clients with periodic agency work.
I want to continue providing good value, easy-to-use systems for smaller clients (I love the closeness to the beneficiaries of my work that this gives!). Balancing my workflow, and getting out into offices to mix with fellow web workers means I'll also continue to enjoy short agency placements, too.
