Communications Director at United Brethren Offices
Fort Wayne, Indiana Area
I am Communications Director for the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, USA, a small denomination with 200 churches scattered across the US, and another 200 in 14 other countries. I've been working here since 1979, though my title has changed.
I oversee all print and internet communications. That means I do writing and editing, graphic design and layout, and web design. That are the biggies.

August 1993 — Present (15 years 2 months)
In 1993, we centralized all communications functions at the United Brethren denominational offices, and I was given the title of Communications Director. In that role I have done the following:
- Edit and design newsletters.
- Written, edited, and designed a wide range of publications--brochures, booklets, posters, reports, promotional materials, etc.
- Went on-site to film videos of our mission work in Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Honduras, Nicaragua, Chinatown (New York City), and various places in the Los Angeles area. I scripted the videos.
- Oversee all print and web communications to our 200+ member churches. I'm responsible for our entire internet strategy. That includes designing and managing our websites, and designing websites for various churches.
- Design and manage our denominational Filemaker database.
- Keep all of the Macs in the building going.

January 1982 — August 1993 (11 years 8 months)
The slash in the title requires this explanation: I was Associate Director in the Department of Church Services, but my primary responsibility was as Editor of the United Brethren denominational magazine. I was pretty much a one-man show, though I had a part-time secretary for most of this period. The magazine was a 32-page monthly publication, sent primarily to people in United Brethren churches. I did a lot of the writing, all of the editing, and all of the layout. I also tackled a wide range of other materials which crossed my desk.

June 1978 — December 1981 (3 years 7 months)
At the end of my junior year at Huntington University, I was hired as Assistant Editor of the publications produced at the United Brethren Headquarters. I was sole editor of a weekly Sunday school take-home paper (which was 100% freelance written), provided about half of the work in publishing the monthly denominational magazine, and gave a lesser amount of time to the adult Sunday school quarterlies (both student and teacher). I also assisted with other promotional materials as needed.
