Stephen Simon’s Summary

Since moving to San Francisco, I have purchased an apartment and worked full time on its gut renovation, performing most of the work myself. This has been a tremendous learning experience, allowing me to hone my design skills and improve my knowledge of construction.

During my ten years in New York City I have done façade restoration on public schools in Brooklyn and master planned universities in India. I have worked on a roof deck in Greenwich Village and six-story rooftop atrium for a hotel design in Suzhou, China. I have sought diverse positions and unfamiliar projects that offered the opportunity to learn about particular building types or systems, and the opportunity to quickly master new roles and subject matter.

At Sydness Architects, I served as Project Manager for a new commercial development in Arkansas. I completed the first building, a 9-story, 250,000 s.f. office building. The full build-out of the project will include three office buildings and a hotel. My responsibilities included design, supervision of document production, client and consultant coordination, running job meetings, and supervising both local and remote teams of architects performing complete Construction Administration. At the same time I was finishing construction administration for a retail store in Manhattan, Design Development for a new 30-room lodge in Colorado, and curtainwall design for a 30-story office building in Shanghai.

I am seeking a position that offers the opportunity to work with intelligent and interesting architects at a firm that challenges its employees and pushes the boundaries of the profession. I seek to develop my design skills and take responsibility for projects and teams.

Stephen Simon’s Specialties:

Design: Schematic designs, design presentations, 3D-modelling software, masterplanned developments, massing studies, facades and curtainwalls. Skilled at learning the mechanics of a new system quickly. Detailed brick masonry facades, architectural precast concrete, EIFS, and stucco facades, glass and aluminum curtainwall systems, and engineered wood frame construction.

InsideArch is the first architecture web site devoted to understanding Professional Culture, as it exists within specific firms. What makes a firm an enjoyable and fulfilling place to work? Which firms provide such an environment? Which firms just don't get it? We believe that providing interns and architects at all levels with information about a firm's work and its culture will serve to improve the efficiency of the market for architectural talent, matching employers with better employees, and interns and architects with better opportunities.

The primary goal of InsideArch is to gather quantitative and qualitative information about the work, culture, and employee experience at architecture firms, to synthesize and present that information in a meaningful, valuable format so as to empower interns and architects to make career decisions more beneficial to themselves and the profession as a whole.
