A Brief History of Spode...
I have been working in IT Journalism since 2000, specialising in computer hardware. The majority of this time was as a freelance working for most of the major IT publications in the UK. I spent 2006 working as Technical Editor of trustedreviews.com, alongside bit-tech.net, before leaving to pursue other interests.
Although I am still interested and write about hardware, my focus has shifted much more towards Linux and software solutions. I still write about hardware, but entire products, rather than at a component level. I have worked alongside manufacturers as a consultant for new product designs.
Tying in with my Linux skills, I am also a developer, having coded benchmark suites used at Custom PC, Trusted Reviews and Bit-Tech (see spodemark.com).
For web development, I naturally I work using PHP/MySQL. I am currently learning the Symfony framework.
Part of my reason for staying as a freelancer, is that I can spread my time amongst different projects. One of these is thinkbikes.com, which I co-run with David Lowe. This is a mountain bike stunt display and training team, performing and training all around the UK.
Pretty much anything challenging and exciting.
