Justin Spicer's Summary
I have held a variety of roles over my nearly 20 years in Technology. My career has primarily been focussed on IT infrastructure, from operational roles supporting IT networks, email and Middleware/Application Hosting tools such as IBM WebSphere Application Server.
After approximately 15 years in IT Infrastructure Operations, I moved into a role within the Application Development division in NAB Technology, as a "Technical Service Owner". A purely strategic role focussed on ensuring end-to-end ownership for a portfolio of applications, the TSO is accountable for ensuring the applications are delivering the best possible commercial value. The role needs to balance cost and risk for each application, and therefore has a strong business focus.
After two years in the TSO role, an opportunity arose within NAB's "Infrastructure Transformation" program, to work in a consulting capacity in the program to provide an application owner's viewpoint in managing the migration/transformation of NAB's entire suite of applications over to "Private Cloud", Infrastructure on Demand hosting infrastructure. I jumped at the role, as the combination of infrastructure and application ownership experience gave me the opportunity to contribute greatly to the success of this highly ambitious project.
With a plan to replace roughly 10,000 legacy servers by moving the applications over to the IoD over 30 months, it will no doubt be a challenging and hopefully rewarding experience. I also expect it's a journey many more organisations will embark upon as they move from owning IT infrastructure to instead consuming it as a service.
