I have been designing and coding applications in VB (with some C) since the early-mid 90's. One of my first projects was an order tracking system for a manufacturer with over 100 employees and 10 branches. Staff at each branch would enter the orders, which were transferred overnight using (then) state-of-the-art 1200 baud modems and Binkleyterm. At the factory, orders were processed in batches and product labels and production sheets were produced automatically as they came in. Barcode scanning was used with every order, and the branches could access a local copy of the database to let customers know the status of their order - and book installations - without needing to contact the warehouse. The software was in use for over nine years, until the business was sold.
My second project was a multi-user accounting system for a giftware wholesaler, which included transactions in multiple currencies and a specialised order picking system to minimise time in the stores. This was used for seven years, until the business was sold.
My next project was a stock charting app, FCharts, which started small and has grown into a stable and effective trading platform. The market scanner runs with user-designed formulae, and the software accepts a huge range of import files. FCharts is now used in over 40 countries worldwide, with a user base in the thousands. Freecharts was first released in 2000, and is still updated regularly.
My website also contains a number of freeware apps, from an MP3 player to novel writing software to a HAM radio callsign announcer.
I designed, coded, installed and maintained every one of these apps on my own. At the same time, I wrote three science fiction novels which are currently on sale across Australia and NZ, I've signed with a major UK literary agent and am about to start my fifth novel.
