Artistic Statement
I have been a costume designer for 30 years primarily for Theatre de la Jeune Lune where I designed costumes for more than 50 of their productions including Don Juan Giovanni, Figaro, Mefistofeles, Amerika, Carmen, The Miser, The Marriage of Figaro, Circus of Tales, The Seagull, Medea, Cosi Fan Tutti, Hamlet, The Magic Flute, Tartuffe and The Three Musketeers. I have also designed costumes at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, three seasons at Children’s Theatre of Minneapolis, The Guthrie Theater, American Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse and Actors Theatre of Louisville. In 2007 I presented designs from The Miser in the Prague Quadrennial, an invited international exhibition of theatre designers. I have also designed for several dance companies in the last ten years including Zorongo Flamenco, Minnesota Dance Theater and Stuart Pimsler Dance Theater.
I work in the theater because I consider myself primarily a collaborative artist. However, I have also spent considerable time exploring independent aspects of my work. Between 1987 and 1990 I studied painting, sculpture, textile design and fashion at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I received my BFA. I also studied haute couture for one year at La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne in Paris, France, a school that specializes in the techniques of design. Following my education I worked in Tokyo, Japan as a textile designer for Yohji Yamamoto, international fashion designer. My primary responsibility was to create fabrics for his Paris/Tokyo runway collections.
