THE EVOLUTION OF SOCIAL MEDIA CONSULTANT
WORK 1.0
After graduation, I worked in marketing communications as a copywriter and web content writer in the financial, insurance, and software industries
WORK 2.0 – FREELANCING
In 2004, I went back to my roots – journalism – and started writing for my local newspaper and freelancing by producing a mom’s club monthly newsletter and writing an e-newsletter for MOTHERS.
I also started my mommy blog, A Mama’s Rant and wrote for group blogs like DotMoms. Then I started a cooking blog, This Mama Cooks!
MY OTHER CAREER - CHARTER SCHOOL FOUNDER
From 2004-2006, I helped start and govern a charter school, Carbon Valley Academy in Frederick, Colorado. Initially I had to cut back on freelancing since I was working on school’s website and writing policy. I resigned from the board in December 2006 and went back to freelancing.
GETTING BACK TO THE WRITE SPOT
Starting in June 2006, I was professionally blogging at A Readable Feast at ClubMom. Then an editor found and hired me to write parenting posts for an online magazine blog called Citizen Mom’s Family Journal. I won two awards for it - a 2006 webaward and 2006 Silver Davey Award. I also continued to work with clients in creating traditional marketing communication pieces.
SOCIAL MEDIA 2008-present
Currently, I am working as a social media consultant and blog wrangler. I gave blogging workshops at the 2008 Northern Colorado Writers Conference and spoke on panels at BlogHer 2008-9 and SXSW 2009. I'm also teaching professional writers and small business people how to start their own blogs and use social media like Twitter and Facebook.
I was a community moderator at CafeMom from November 2007 to February 2009 and have moderated several other sites. In May 2008, I started working for Mom Central Consulting and am now their social media manager and edit and write for several of their blogs.
