Jay Small is an interactive/online executive geared for customer-centered innovation and business growth. He has succeeded as an Internet business strategist, product innovator, information designer, marketer, consultant, writer and editor.
Small is the executive director of content and product development at Scripps Interactive Newspapers Group, part of the E.W. Scripps Co. He oversees technology developers, user experience architects, search optimization specialists, content and video specialists, and interdisciplinary project managers.
A 1984 graduate of Southern Illinois University, Small started his pro career at The Sun Herald of Biloxi, Miss., and The News-Sentinel of Fort Wayne, Ind.
In 1988, Small joined the Rocky Mountain News of Denver, and was soon promoted to art director. Then, in 1991, Small became art director at The Indianapolis Star, where he reorganized the art, graphics and design operations and redesigned the paper, winning Society for News Design honors.
In 1995, Small began developing Internet services and businesses for The Star. As general manager of online services, he oversaw development of what became IndyStar.com.
Small developed a consulting practice in e-business software tools and methods, as part of Evantage Consulting LLC of Minneapolis, in 1999.
In early 2000, Small joined Thomson Multimedia, maker of RCA electronics products, as manager of digital media services. Small led a team charged with creating, finding and evaluating consumer service business opportunities to be enabled on digital media devices.
In 2001, Small joined Belo Interactive as regional director of news and operations. In 2003, Small was promoted to director of product development for BI. He moved to Scripps in January 2005.
