As Graphics Manager I was responsible for managing the design staff in the production of 100 catalogs per year. This role included negotiating prices with vendors. In my first year as manager I negotiated a $15K savings in vendor costs and reduced costs due to in-house production errors from $64K to $8K. It was in this role that I first became involved in computer programming. I built a system to automate a lot of the highly repetitive tasks involved in image processing (checking for correct color mode and file resolution) as well as the construction of the catalogs themselves. The system applied the database-driven, dynamic content principals of modern corporate websites to print catalog publication.
