Meteorological rebel: pushed the envelope in long-range forecasting, beyond the comfort zone of most of my professors. But it was all worth it.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), The National Weather Service (NWS)

June 1984August 1987 (3 years 3 months)

Collected regional meteorological hourly observations (via fax printouts in the pre-Internet days) at the old National Weather Service office at New York City's Rockefeller Center, and broadcasted over NOAA-weather radio frequencies in the NYC metropolitan area; worked part-time in the summers and through the holidays during high school and in the summer before attending Cornell University's Atmospheric Sciences program. The best part was learning how to forecast storms from the NWS forecasters, and provide 5-7 day forecasts over the airwaves (very advanced in those days).

Let’s face it: Mother Nature is becoming a big(ger) player
nowadays, and as an atmospheric scientist focused on
business continuity and vulnerability assessments, I have
never been busier attending to different industrial sectors’,
companies’ and individuals’ unique investment needs that
are being more regularly impacted by the rather telling
increase in extreme natural events around the world.
Obviously, weather has most likely played a rather
significant role in risk management in decades past, at least
on a cyclical basis. But today, the revenue and profits of
about 83% of all companies are directly affected by weather
hazards, and not only is that number going up and becoming
more inclusive, but the severity of losses are swelling too.

2012 and 2013 are likely to be volatile years for potentially many reasons,
but not withstanding, this will be a solar cycle max. As electrical and
magnetic energy from the sun hits Earth, have you ever thought about
what could happen during a larger solar flare, or even how it might
affect your market portfolio? Sounds far-fetched, but think again.
