Signa Vianen's Summary

I am a 40-year-old Surinamese* national with years long professional experience in:
- gathering local news
- maintaining an overview of local, regional and international developments
- obtaining knowledge on main issues
- raising awareness on various themes (e.g. health related, new technologies or cutting edge public interest).

Goals: adding to general public insight on different subject matters.

*What and where is Suriname?
Suriname's 161.470 km² are situated on the northeast coast of South America, bordering Brazil in the south. The semi-official language in this former Dutch colony is ... Dutch. Its population consists of descendants of the original inhabitants (Amerindians), plus descendants of imported African slaves, descendants of former East Indian and Indonesian contract laborers, and also descendants of Chinese, Lebanese, Portuguese, Jewish and other immigrants. Any unsuspecting tourist feels pleasantly surprised by the exquisite local cuisine, a fascinating intact nature, the mainly wooden and red bricked historical architecture (UNESCO Heritage Listed) in the Capital City, lovely tropical weather and a delicate blend of witty, spontaneous and also friendly people. Local currency is SRD, the Surinamese dollar. Dominant foreign currencies: US$ and euro.

Signa Vianen's Experience

Press Attaché/Analyst-Translator (Fulltime)

Diplomatic Mission

April 2010Present (1 year 10 months)

Required tasks.

Public Relations Officer - unresolved status

Telecommunicatie Autoriteit Suriname [TAS]

February 2008Present (4 years)

Never a dull moment: as I rise early and start filming on a steep artificial hill (called Tower II) at Rosebel Gold Mines, Brokopondo District.

Or once I set out filming on a container ship at the main dock,

then get busy designing newspaper ad formats, right after text completion.

Freelance Journalist

Parbode Opinieblad

January 2008Present (4 years 1 month)

Parbode publishes an array of magazine articles, varying from either background features to monthly publications with a political, human interest, and/or business angle.

I personally prefer writing whatever material I consider to be essential. From whichever perspective, be it social issues or individual experiences.

Owner

deSign A Wordservices

August 2005Present (6 years 6 months)

Always busy: whether writing a summary fact sheet on Suriname's main industries [IamGold gold, Suralco bauxite, State Oil Staatsolie oil, etc.] as requested by an Honorary Consul,

or writing and editing a quarterly university magazine and taking it to print,

or rewriting and renewing web content upon an invitation thereto by a Netherlands-based ICT company [I worked on location in Amsterdam],

or publishing three pages long newspaper ads on the Low Income Shelter Housing Program [LISP]*, a joint fund created by both local government and the Inter-American Development Bank, IDB.

* More specifically: the task consisted of thoroughly editing and publishing the Program's beneficiaries, by name. Multiple listings included selections by both region and admission date.

Volunteer | Board Member [PR - Tech.]

FUWIVA

20072007 (less than a year)

Four words: Hard work behind scenes!
Upon a 'kind request' to take part in the preparations for the Para Junior League [PJL], I suddenly found myself being a FUWIVA board member.

PJL is a Clarence Seedorf youth soccer competition initiative. Surinamese-origin Seedorf, presently a midfielder with Italian soccer club AC Milan, has won the Champions League Cup thrice with different clubs.

My volunteer activities consisted of: summarizing FUWIVA goals and objectives (fact sheet), filming on location (Wit Santi and other spots in the Para District), writing press releases/media invitations/infomercial scenarios/newspaper ads/radio commercials/TV commercials, a radio shout out, creating the list of team names, all value based (I chose Sranan terms: Seryusu, Grani, Krin, Pasensi etc.), safeguarding PR budget accountability, distributing PR material (radio, newspaper, TV) & numerous, countless phone calls.

In short: a 24/7 workload until I went on to my present position with TAS.

Production Informatiebulletin [Magazine]

Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname [AdeKUS]

2004December 2006 (2 years)

In sole charge of production (deciding, writing, editing and finalizing content) :

deciding on additional topics; conducting interviews with university officials, lecturers etc.; attending seminars, workshops etc.; picking up on themes, regional and international developments, eventually featuring interesting elements;

collecting images or shooting photos; being informed by student body representatives on past and upcoming events; addressing and answering emails; summarizing input submitted by (local or foreign) experts on a variety of themes, ranging from law to biodiversity;

simplifying academic language, as the magazine featured developments within the university's entire infrastructure including all three faculties (Technological, Medical and Social Sciences) whilst the target group consisted of mainly average readers - general public;

hiring and instructing graphic designer; creating basic lay out; screening prepress files; taking the files to the printer's.

Editor Sranan Dialect

Spectrum Prisma Sranan Tongo Dictionary

20042004 (less than a year)

Sranan is the main dialect in Suriname. As one out of three locals*, I too was privileged to be part of a wonderful experience: (the making of) the Prisma Sranan Tongo Dictionary.

Editing the original database in assistance to both writers (Juliënne Blanker and Jaap Dubbeldam) was a true, true honor.

About the book:
This overview of Sranan words and verbal expressions was the first selection ever translated into Dutch ánd vice versa. The dictionary was published by Spectrum, a Dutch firm. Its first edition in 2005 sold out in weeks in the Netherlands.

About the publisher:
Spectrum is also the publisher of the Winkler Prins encyclopedia. A Microsoft/Spectrum collaboration resulted in the 2004 Winkler Prins Encarta.
