I am poised at my Second Saturn Return. It's all about reinventing myself. I am who I am and there's really no changing that. I am, though, going to change the ratios around a little bit. Dressage is going to take the back seat and Philosophy is moving up to the front seat. To be absolutely clear....I am interested in nature mysticism, which, of course, includes horses. It's time for me, though, to be w-a-y more integrated about my horse-related interests than simply "teaching dressage". Seeing dressage as "just dressage" is too reductionistic and makes me feel a bit "practico-inert" (Sartre, Critique of Dialectical Reason, 433). It is, quite simply, too third dimensional. Seeing the horse-human relationship as a path to transformation and evolution breathes life into riding and is where my head is really at. I'm ready to ride...and live...in the fourth dimension. My 2009 initiative, therefore, will be all about working with "inner dressage"...assisting people in understanding the role of horses in human evolution and transformation. Forget about getting your heels down and your sternum up. Let's open our heart chakras.
My horse is my teacher. So is my intuition. My horse is willing to accompany me into this new phase in my professional life. When I'm not hanging out with her, I'll keep reading philosophy in the sauna during the late night hours. I've done that for years pretty effectively. It's funny how much you remember when you are sweating.

I am launching a new initiative in 2009, based on the recently released second edition of my book, _Dressage in the Fourth Dimension_. This initiative will focus on animal spirituality and the transformative aspects of the horse-human relationship. I am interested in raising consciousness about the potential of riding for human transformation and evolution. I feel finished with just reminding people to weight their inside seatbone and keep their shoulders back. Time is short and horses could save the Planet.

I have been a Philosophy Professor ever since Plato was a pup. I have been an active dressage clinician for just about as long. 2009, though, will see me drop the "dressage clinician" part as I launch a new initiative that I have decided to call "Dressage in the Fourth Dimension". This work, named after the new edition of my book, Dressage in the Fourth Dimension (New World Library, 2008), will deal with philosophical issues of animal spirituality, transpersonality and evolutionary unfoldment. It will be much more wholistic than merely "teaching dressage". The primary emphasis will be on the REAL stuff of riding...the inner work and the horses' contribution to facilitating our transformation. Don't call me if you just want to learn how to do a shoulder-in. If, on the other hand, you're into letting your horse show you how to deal with your pain body and/or shadow, I'm ready to answer the phone!
Ph.D. , Philosophy , 1972 — 1997
Yes, you read those dates right....1972-1997. The system here on LinkedIn isn't set up to accomodate geeks like me. I have two Master's and a Ph.D. The real scoop is:
M.Ed.: University of South Carolina, 1972 (Psychology)
M.A. : Norwich University, 1990 (Philosophy)
Ph.D.: Coursework at University of Chicago
Dissertation and Award: Union Institute, 1997 (Philosophy) with distinction
Skiing, hiking, bicycling, riding, keyboard, Baroque music, studio art. I am into a vegan raw food diet, yoga and meditation. I am a Jean Gebser freak, which makes me feel okay about saying that I love both Neoplatonism and Existentialism. And, then, I have to tell you that I have burned the midnight oil, for years actually, studying Lewis Carroll. It is a totally insatiable, unexplainable interest. I published my signature academic book, Behind the Looking Glass, on Carroll (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2008) this year and it is getting alot of attention. Check it out at www.lewiscarrollmyth.com and, after you've read it, let me know what you think!
I have spent a lifetime trying to be authentic. Part of that quest has been about avoiding group and association labels.
I received a Faculty of the Year Award this year at the College where I teach. I feel, though, a little like Jean-Paul Sartre about it...thinking that it might be best to turn it down in the interest of not being objectified.
