  • Connecting With Audiences: Lessons Learned from The Blair Witch Project

    • Microfilmmaker Magazine
    • August 1, 2010
    Authors: Sheri Candler

Mike Monello was one of the producers of The Blair Witch Project, so I sat down with him to discuss some of the tactics employed during the early promotion of Blair Witch that enabled it to become the phenomenon of the new millennium for independent film and how indie filmmakers can use those same tactics in the world of social networking that is so pervasive, and essentially free, today.

  • Building a Community Web Around an Artist

    • Hope For Film

The key premise is that all artists should be building a tribe (a Seth Godin term as it relates to marketing) or an engaged audience for their work. One that transitions from one project to the next throughout your career and indeed your life. These supporters will be your friends, your evangelists, your patrons and if you cultivate this relationship, you will not have need to reach a mass in order to make a comfortable living.

  • Cutting Edge Connections: New Tools for Distributing Your Films On The Web

    • Microfilmmaker Magazine
    • July 2, 2011
    Authors: Sheri Candler

Lately, several companies have emerged to help filmmakers do just that. Instead of looking for outside distribution companies to buy your work's rights, hope they treat you fairly, and wait for them to bring it out for sale, consider these tools to go direct. When you can cut out as many of the layers separating your work from its audience, you'll profit more.

Some filmmakers start the social media process very early in production (Nina Paley started blogging three years before she released “Nita Sings the Blues”); some begin only after their films hit the festival circuit. However you do it, social media isn’t just setting up a Facebook and Twitter account; social media means anywhere you can share a link, comment on a post, or self-publish content for everyone to read, watch or listen. And it’s always a work in progress.
