Amsterdam Area, Netherlands
Henk van Ess has, according to some recommendations at Linkedin, 'deep knowledge of the web'. He is a speaker, writer, investigative journalist, internet trainer and internet consultant for radio, TV and newspapers. He helps to bring multimedia and internet into the newsroom, not by preaching but through practical Medialabs.
He trained over 1000 professionals in the practical and critical use of information technology. Henk helped Royal Philips Electronics to use the web more creative, as inspiration source for new products. He trained reporters from radio, tv and newspapers in intelligent internet research (f.e AD, NOS Sport, NRC, Zembla, VRT, NCRV, KRO, Avro, FD, Vrij Nederland) and does the same for companies and government (f.e. Philips, Commissariaat voor de Media, Consumentenbond, KLPD, Ministerie van Justitie, Dutch libraries). Henk is also deeply involved in worldwide training of reporters. He is cofounder of the European Centre For Computer Assisted Research, founded in 2008 and is a regular speaker on world conferences about 'digital digging'.
Henk teaches internet research & digital journalism at the Universiteit van Amsterdam, the Erasmusuniversiteit in Rotterdam and the Katholieke Hogeschool in Mechelen (Belgium) and is board member of the Dutch-Flemish association of investigating journalists VVOJ. He is often quoted in Dutch media.
Van Ess is patron of DMOZ.NL, Cave Your Trolls, thelongtailers.com and member of several think tanks for new internet concepts, new open source software and Web 2.0 applications. He is the former head of internet at www.ad.nl, the second newspaper in The Netherlands. As a hobby, he publishes two websites about internet research, www.voelspriet.nl (Dutch),quoted on the official Google Blog under 'What We're Reading' and www.searchbistro.com (English).
