Director of Information Services at Shriners Hospitals for Children
Greater Los Angeles Area
Beginning as a very specialized technician (systems programmer specializing in IBM's "MVS" operating system), I rose through the ranks into management, first as a front-line supervisor to other systems programmers. I was fortunate enough to get this management position at a company (Kaiser Permanente) that was easing into a more matrixed-management environment, such that I was exposed to several responsibilities outside of my oversight of systems programmers. This prepared me to jump into a director-level position at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where I could no longer rely on my technology experience, as they had nearly every imaginable technology except for MVS. I honed my technology management skills there, perhaps particularly with data networking, and I was scouted out to come work at SITEL Corporation. SITEL was an excellent challenge, as the pace was very much rapid-fire and the projects were quite diverse. Working there as a virtual CIO in charge of all aspects of computing and both voice and data networking prepared me for subsequent Director and Senior Director level positions at LabCorp and Lovelace respectively. At Lovelace, I also had the experience of participating in a corporate acquisition. Following Lovelace, I worked at Perot Systems, my first foray into technology consulting, where I was again the virtual CIO for several hospitals and related facilities in an outsourced-IT environment.
