  • Policy Officer & Manager

    Scottish Executive

    (Government Agency; Government Administration industry)

    19992007 (8 years )

Over eight years, held various posts within the Scottish Government, based in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

    • As Assistant Private Secretary to the Minister for Health and Community Care, I helped ensure that the Minister’s office operated efficiently. I had to constantly prioritise issues, quickly understand the key points of Ministerial papers and manage the performance of two administrative staff. I constantly dealt with people at all levels of the organisation — such as Ministers, senior management, officials and the Press Desk — as well as a variety of external contacts — such as officials in the NHS, lobbying organisations, MSPs and members of the public.
    • As Policy Officer with the Scotland Office, I arranged overseas visits for the Secretary of State and other Ministers. This involved setting objectives, creating a planning document and ensuring all elements were in place. Flexibility was a key requirement as changes to the visits occurred constantly, even up to the last minute. Sufficient time had to be built in to produce extensive briefing packs, which included background to engagements; speeches, and notes on topical issues.
    • I also was editor & features writer for a network of Scottish Government websites promoting Scotland internationally and maintained the editorial calendar.

In all my posts, I have developed effective written skills in the drafting of minutes, contributing to press activity, dealing with correspondence, researching Parliamentary Questions and producing Ministerial briefing and speeches. I am confident dealing with issues in writing, face to face and by telephone.

Each of my posts has involved liaising with both internal and external stakeholders and regular communication with organisations such as Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, other Whitehall Departments, VisitScotland etc.
