Stephanie M. Watts is the woman known as The Sauda Voice. The blog-formatted webzine was founded by Stephanie in the Spring of 2008 and it's first article was published on June 1st of that same year. Stephanie is a woman of color giving voice to her experience and that of others who look like her. In doing so, she shares a perspective often ignored or misunderstood by "mainstream" society, but important nonetheless.
Sauda (pronounced SAH-OOO-DAH) is Swahili for "dark beauty" or "dark skinned." The Sauda Voice represents a place where (1) the beauty, diversity and intellect of dark skinned people, especially black women, is always acknowledged and embraced, and (2) the issues important to them are given a voice and a platform by which to use it. The Sauda Voice is also a place where people of color are not constantly assaulted by information and opinion filtered through a lens of ignorance, bias, stereotypes and at times, racism.
Stephanie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from California State University - Northridge, a Master of Science in Public Policy and Management (with a dual concentration in Policy Analysis and Information Systems) from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Juris Doctor from Loyola Marymount University (Loyola Law School). Stephanie is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and resides in Los Angeles, California.
