Sasan Nouranian's Summary

Sasan Nouranian is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering at the University of Mississippi. He received his Ph.D. in 2011 from the Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering at Mississippi State University. He also holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Polymer Engineering. His research interests are primarily in the area of materials science and engineering with specialization in polymers and polymer composites. Focus areas include design and characterization of polymer nanocomposites and smart multifunctional materials and computational studies of lower length scale material phenomena, especially interfaces in hybrid materials. In recent years, he has focused on the characterization of interphase in thermoset polymer nanocomposites through molecular dynamics simulation as well as mechanical characterization of these materials. He has published in Carbon, Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, and Journal of Composite Materials and served as Chair for the Composites Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

I have developed a semi-empirical many-body interatomic potential for hydrocarbons and polymers based on the modified embedded-atom method (MEAM). This unique potential can handle bond making and bond breaking during the molecular dynamics simulation of organics and organics/metal material systems and is useful for studying fracture phenomena, polymer/metal interfaces, polymer nanocomposites, etc. I'm currently working on the extension of this potential to unsaturated hydrocarbons and oxygen/nitrogen-containing compounds as well as applications of the potential in the calculation of bond breaking in linear alkanes as a precursor to molecular dynamics studies of rupture in polymer chains during material deformation.

Graduate Research Assistant

Mississippi State University

Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Higher Education industry

August 2007May 2011 (3 years 10 months) Starkville, MS

I have used a statistical design of experiments and response surface modeling to fabricate, test, analyze, and optimize a vapor-grown carbon nanofiber/vinyl ester nanocomposite system with respect to a variety of mechanical properties for automotive applications. I have also used molecular dynamics simulations in collaboration with a colleague to study the formation of an interphase region in these nanocomposite materials during the fabrication.
