Freelance graphic designer.
(Privately Held; 11-50 employees; Publishing industry)
2007 — 2007 (less than a year)
I was offered this position as a way to bring additional value to the company while continuing to grow and implement my self-taught marketing skills. I collaborated with the company owners to define strategic goals and objectives, then researched industry trends to identify potential growth areas. Using this information, I suggested a variety of strategies and campaigns to achieve the owners' objectives. I then oversaw the implementation of the projects.

For a change of pace and to test my managerial skills, I took on the challenge of managing the customer service department. I not only managed the department, I also worked as a Customer Service Rep. I hired, trained, and managed new employees, and dismissed underperforming employees when necessary. I was responsible for coordinating workflow with the warehouse department and an independent contractor to optimize order processing and employee time management. I learned a great deal about how to handle conflicts, address concerns, and keep customers and my direct reports happy!

January 2001 — July 2006 (5 years 7 months)
For six years (after graduating from college) I was an in-house graphic designer for Remedia Publications, a publisher of educational materials for special needs students. During my tenure there I was involved in all the various design work of the company, including product layout, catalogs, marketing, website, etc. In most cases I was responsible not only for the graphic design work but also management of the projects. I was especially helpful in this position because I kept on top of deadlines and learned the ins and outs of the business in order to make better decisions and anticipate needs.
B.A. in Elementary Education , Graphic Design, Education , 1996 — 2000
I developed a keen interest in graphic design during my high school yearbook experience, so I majored in graphic design at ASU, until I actually got into the graphic design program at ASU and found out that it wasn't in line with my actual graphic design experience in the workplace (student jobs and volunteer graphic design). So I changed majors and got my degree in Elementary Education, but when I graduated I decided to pursue a graphic design career instead of teaching, and was fortunate to find a graphic design position at an educational publisher!

I received the Teamwork award five times at Remedia. I got a lot more awards in high school and college, though honestly I don't remember what most of them are. Hmm, maybe I'd better pick up the pace. Or maybe awards just aren't as important to me as they used to be :) Performance is what really counts. The best honors come from working with great people and doing a great job.
