October 2007 — September 2008 (1 year )
I left Microsoft to start a consulting company, where I executed projects for client accounts belonging to Glenn Thomas. The first client, Doubleclick, hired me to rewrite their client-side video advertising framework. For another client, I led a Flex engineering team to ship a consumer application that merged live satellite video and real-time racing statistics from the Kentucky Derby and other racing venues around the world.

The incubation group behind Expression Studio was responsible for bringing Microsoft into the professional design tools market. Over two product cycles and four years, we deconstructed the graphical user interface into malleable building blocks for designers. In addition to shipping consumer products, I coordinated on API design with the WPF, Silverlight, and Visual Studio groups.

August 2002 — October 2003 (1 year 3 months)
This startup operated virtual campuses for brick-and-mortar universities during an era of explosive growth in the market. My original job was building a courseware platform and pipeline for in-house animators. Shortly after joining, I also pitched and implemented a live video collaboration product that scaled with the exponential growth in student population. We did other interesting things like non-linear video editing in the browser, and "DJ" mixing tools for live graduation ceremonies.
(Computer Software industry)
August 1999 — August 2000 (1 year 1 month)
Part-time internship at a now-defunct web startup called Moonlight Media. I installed my home computer on the corner of an employee's desk and worked in exchange for access to software, mentorship, and high-speed internet.
MS , Human Computer Interaction , 2000 — 2002
Full scholarship to graduate school in human-computer interaction. On the first day of school, I declined a job offer with my favorite company (Macromedia, acquired by Adobe) and then proceeded to student orientation where I met my future wife... so that worked out well :)
BS , Health Information Management , 1997 — 2000
I finished college at a hospital campus focusing on medical information systems. Passed many weeks in basements of various hospitals, sometimes as full-time intern, sometimes as part-time janitor (janitor pays better). Spent the days studying healthcare topics, and spent the nights studying interaction design.
