Hello, my name is Sam Pointer. I’ve worked professionally within IT for the past nine years. I am a member of the BCS, the largest professional body for ICT workers in the UK.
My previous employers were a specialist financial software house selling to and supporting the operations of major financial institutions across the globe, and major British high-street bank, where I was part of the development team that successfully undertook the largest data migration in the UK at that time.
During my time working at my last employer I was the technical lead for the installation, performance tuning and testing of the a large Java financial application running on Red Hat Linux 4 and Oracle 10g for a major international bank.
In a former role at that company I was also part of the technical team implementing the infrastructure for a subsidiary ASP (Application Service Provider) operation. At its peak the infrastructure was supporting the online financial operations of nineteen large global financial companies. A proud achievement from that role was being the sole designer, implementer and primary maintainer of a bespoke BIND-based DNS failover mechanism.
During my last role I was the technical UNIX lead supporting the production support division. Notable achievements during this role included a successful performance tuning exercise at Sun Microsystems testing facility, a large performance and stress testing exercise at major international bank's facility in Honk Kong, and further installations for an Irish bank.
With my current employer I’m helping to build the multiple datacentre infrastructure for a financial reporting application - dabbling in Solaris, Fedora, Windows Subsystem for UNIX integration and Java application servers. I’m lucky to work within a small skilled and autonomous team doing good work with a good secure infrastructure.
UNIX, Linux, Solaris, low-level TCP, Perl, Ant, shell scripting, Ruby, JVM performance tuning and application stack optimization.
