I teach English to adult learners, using a variety of software programs as well as personal lessons that I create on practical issues needed for day-to-day life in an American city. My classes include students at all levels of achievement. Some speak no English at all; some are relatively proficient. Most are from Latin America. A major part of my job is encouraging these students so that they'll continue to come back.

My co-author (Sadie Kneidel) and I have written 2 books together, Veggie Revolution (2005) and Going Green (2008); our blog is an extension of our books together. Veggie Revolution explores the American food industry - profiling entrepreneurs who are raising healthy foods sustainably and humanely, and corporations who keep their penny-shaving methods in the dark, literally. Going Green examines earth-friendly consumer choices, from housing, to cars, to food. Our blog (http://veggierevolution.blogspot.com) covers environmental topics including "green" food, energy-efficient homes, and eco-tourism.

I help high-school seniors create professional Activity Resumes to send with their college applications. Many of the students at this independent school apply to the most selective and competitive universities in the U.S.and Europe, so the resumes must be polished and representative of the students' achievements.
(Publishing industry)
1993 — Present (16 years )
I have written 11 books on environment, social responsibility, natural history, and science education. This has been my primary employment for the last several years, especially while researching, writing, and promoting our last two books: Veggie Revolution (2005) and Going Green (2008). Veggie Revolution is about the dark side of the American food industry, as well as stories of small farmers who are blazing new trails in sustainable food production. Going Green: A Consumer's Guide to a Shrinking Planet offers information and advice on making sustainable choices for clothing, diet, housing, transportation, and investments. Both books are on www.amazon.com.

August 1996 — June 2002 (5 years 11 months)
I taught reading and writing to small groups of students outside the classroom. Most students were performing below grade level. My job included assessment of reading and writing skills using a variety of diagnostic tools, and curriculum planning for my groups. Students were moved in and out of groups as their performance improved.

I taught the lecture and laboratory course for Introductory Biology.

September 1992 — June 1995 (2 years 10 months)
I was hired to create a hands-on science program for a previously textbook-only program, and did so. This work was the basis of two of my first books from Fulcrum Publishing, Creepy Crawlies and the Scientific Method, and Classroom Critters and the Scientific Method. Both are still available from Fulcrum and on www.amazon.com. I presented my work at a number of science teacher conventions, including the North Carolina Science Teachers Association, and the National Association of Biology Teachers.

I taught laboratory courses in Ecology, Comparative Anatomy and Physiology, Introductory Biology and Introductory Zoology
Ph.D. , Biology with concentration in Ecology
For my doctoral work at UNC Chapel Hill, I studied the ecological interactions between closely-related species of woodland salamanders. I published 2 academic papers on the interactions between Plethodon jordani and Plethodon glutinosus in the NC mountains, funded by several grants from Highlands Biological Stations. But my doctoral dissertation was on the interactions of Ambystoma opacum and Ambystoma maculatum in the piedmont of North Carolina. Different aspects of the Ambystoma study were published in three prominent academic journals - Ecology, Copeia, and the Journal of Herpetology. My advisor for my doctoral work was Dr. Nelson Hairston, Sr. Also on my doctoral committee was Dr. Henry Wilbur of Duke University.
B.S. with Honors , Biology
While at UNC Charlotte, I studied mouth-brooding behavior in cichlid fish with Dr. Walter Graul, and the ecology of the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker in the long-leaf pine ecosystem on the coastal plain of North Carolina with Dr. Richard Brown.
M.S. (incomplete) , Zoology
At OU, I worked with Dr. Roger Fouts teaching American Sign Language to chimpanzees. Dr. Fouts has been a pioneer in the field of language acquisition in primates. I also worked with Dr. Bedford Vestal in the study of social interactions in orangutans at the Oklahoma City Zoo. During this time, I became more interested in ecology than in animal behavior, and transferred to UNC to pursue ecological studies.
