Sally Dagna’s Summary

My bookkeeping experience is somewhat eclectic. I owned my own special event business for many years in Arizona, and as the owner I also took care of all the bookkeeping and tax filings for the business. Later, I provided some account services for a variety of other businesses in Arizona and California.

Currently, I work about half the time in the areas of data entry and payroll, letting my husband whose specialty is taxes handle the larger issues. The other half of my time is spent networking and public relations.

As far as professional goals are concerned, mine include working more closely with the independent film industry in our area.

My expertise with regard to independent film in particular comes from both education and experience. My BFA was earned in Film Production, and I have been a partner in small independent film companies both in Arizona and Washington, so have much more first-hand knowledge about the types of expenses and what they cover with regard to that particular industry than those who have not worked directly in it.

The MCPDCPBC is a non-profit organization currently being formed to support the work of the Mill Creek Police Department's Citizen Patrol through organized fund-raising events and community awareness efforts.

The Mill Creek Police Department's Citizen Patrol is comprised of area residents who go through a rigorous six-week training program followed by on-going training throughout the year as opportunity arises. The members are not City of Mill Creek employees. They are all either currently working or retired adults from the local area who bring with them a wealth of skill and experience. Several are past law enforcement professionals, while others are current business owners and employees from the greater Seattle community.

The MCPDCPBC's purpose in raising needed funds for equipment, training, vehicles, and other expenses through this non-profit organization is two-fold: 1) to increase the community's understanding of the vast resources and services being provided to it at little-to-no impact to the City's strained budget, and 2) to garner financial support from the community the MCPDCPBC serves.

My position within this organization is currently Vice President of the Board of Directors.

We provide bookkeeping, payroll services, and tax preparation for small business owners both locally and in other states. We maintain the flexibility to provide as much or little support as our clients need. Some (and we encourage this) come to us for QuickBooks training so they can do all their own data entry, then see us every quarter to clean up anything that may need adjusting and generate their quarterly reports. Others call us on an as-needed basis, while still more give us 100% of their bookkeeping work and just drop off or fax us everything as it comes in.

Independent filmmakers call on us from time to time as projects come up, and we take care of any needs they may have. In some cases they need payroll run, followed by sending out all the W-2's the following January. For others we have done full-blown bookkeeping pre-through-post, payroll, and liaison between the filmmaker and SAG to make sure all the union's requirements are met and reports filed.

Our Senior project, shot entirely on 16mm FILM stock (yes, actual film stock -- the only medium a true die-hard filmmaker would shoot back when money was no object) won copious awards and became a local cult classic of sorts. Ah! The days of old when we could strap the camera man to the top of the car and drive like a maniac down the open desert highway! Those were the days, my friend!

Societies?!? Who had time for that? We were too busy shooting and developing and splicing and syncing sound tracks with A/B rolls!

Sculpture

I only attended one semester, and that was to learn how to sculpt. I absolutely loved the class and came away with an awesome sculpture that I cherish. Now, if I only had the time to just relax and sculpt!

Oceanography

Oh, how I loved this major and the dream I had of traveling the planet on the Calypso saving the whales and what ever else lived out there in the wild blue yonder. Then, I discovered how easily I get sea-sick. Yep -- can't do much with a degree in Oceanography if you can't actually be out there in the ocean without losing your lunch. So, I learned a lot and loved every minute of it, but ........

Spanish

I don't think the teacher liked me very much. I kept asking for "the actual correct" way to say things rather than the local slang version. Oh, it was great learning the local vernacular, but I knew that when I moved back to the States I was going to need to know how to actually talk to others whose Spanish was not learned down in Panama. Wonderful people -- fantastic beauty all around -- but I appreciated being able to talk more easily with the local people AND be able to return here and speak easily with our friends from Puerto Rico and Mexico and know the difference between slang and proper. Knowing the difference truly opened doors for me later on that I appreciated very much.
