Ryan R. Smith specializes in web standards compliant web design, usability, interaction design, information architecture, search engine optimization, graphic design, and rich user experiences.

Ryan's specialties: Building user interfaces for web sites and applications with Drupal (an open source software package that functions equally well as a PHP and JavaScript-based application framework as well as a content management system - see also: http://drupal.org), user-centered design, user experience, print and web graphic design, interaction design, communicating with screen-based prototype sites, wireframe and page flow diagrams, whiteboarding, information architecture, web standards, CSS, HTML, usability, search engine optimization (SEO), rich user experiences (RIA systems), centralized and distributed team environments, agile project management, open source methodologies (tools, applications and community), GoogleMaps and web-based cartography, web-based software-as-a-solution (SaaS) systems and mapping return on investment (ROI) with web-based analytics.

Ryan is also always staying abreast of new and upcoming web technologies. These days it seems to be all about educating stakeholders about exactly what "responsive web design" means and how having a "responsive website" does not mean having a "mobile ready website" nor a "mobile friendly website" nor even a "usable website on a mobile device". Ryan is looking forward to fully embracing the mobile-first aspect of designing & developing online services & systems for real people.

Volunteer Experience & Causes

Disater Action Team

American Red Cross
(8 months)Disaster and Humanitarian Relief

I volunteered for the Milwaukee County American Red Cross on theor Disaster Action Team (DAT) and was on-call twice per week from 6pm to 6am for local disasters occurred (i.e.: home fires, major flooding, and other disasters) that forced people out of their homes.

Once on-site, I would represent the American Red Cross, work with fellow Red Cross volunteers to asses damage to the affected home (and their personal belongings), liaise between the Milwaukee Police & Fire departments to communicate status back to the occupants of the dwelling.

After the DAT established a plan for the occupants, I would also help arrange temporary, alternate shelter and transportation.

Alliant Power website(Link)

A multilingual, web portal built upon the Drupal 6 CMS for Alliant Power's diesel engine service customers selling Alliant Power OEM diesel replacement & re-manufactured products. I was responsible for all facets of keeping this web site up-to-date; identifying, developing, designing & implementing new features & functionality as well as optimizing site performance & SEO attributes for tracking analytical data.

Diesel Forward corporate website(Link)

Diesel Forward, Inc. (http://dieselforward.com) is basic website for the parent company of Alliant Power, DIS Distribution and Diesel Injection Service. It is built on the Drupal 7 CMS and is displayed using a modified version of Drupal's default theme Bartik.

Team members:

Z1R Helmets website(Link)

Utilize web standards compliant xHTML and CSS as well as jQuery and LeMans’s existing JSTL Tag Library. Take design team’s Photoshop file to build new site and work within, and around, 2 month timeline. Utilize transparent PNGs to carry out designer’s wishes and incorporate transparent modal pop-up windows for additional content then build-out dynamic JSP/JSTL template system.

Team members:

Networked Insights website(Link)

Designed and developed boilerplate website for new start-up Networked Insights. Applied newly designed branding to site and maintained content after launching site which itself was launched in front of a live "launch party" audience for Networked Insights.

LeMond Bikes website(Link)

Designed site's overall look & feel based upon LeMond's new and improved (at the time) brand identity. Collaborated on the design of the LeMond website with Ken Soliva and the development of a basic PHP template system with Joshua Hoover. Due to the low page count of this site, I built-out the entire production PHP site in web-standard compliant HTML/CSS/JS.

Note: This site is no longer published as Trek Bicycle Corp changed directions with the LeMond brand and thus has taken the site down.

Team members:

Bontrager website(Link)

Designed site's overall look & feel based upon Bontrager's new and improved (at the time) branding. Worked with an outside front-end development company, Catics, Ltd. to develop a working HTML/CSS/JS prototype. Worked closely with Crown Peak to ported the Catics prototype site to the Crown Peak CMS.

Note: This site is no longer published as I had designed it back in 2003 however, Trek Bicycle Corp continues to move the brand forward through the use of the Bontrager website.

Team members:

Klien Bikes website(Link)

Designed site's overall look & feel based upon Klein Bike's existing brand standards, utilized HTML/CSS for development of working prototype and assisted in porting the site to the Crown Peak CMS.

Note: This site is no longer published as Trek Bicycle Corp changed directions with the Klein brand and thus has taken the site down.
