Daniel A. Okun Chapter of Engineers Without Border at UNC
President, Ex Oficio- September 2008 to June 2010
EWB helps disadvantaged communities improve their quality of life through implementation of environmentally and economically sustainable engineering projects, while developing internationally responsible engineering students.
As president, I oversaw 6 different project teams working in four countries, expanded the chapter membership, and traveled to Ecuador to assess the feasibility of launching a project there. After leaving office, I organized a Symposium on Small-Scale International Development projects for the four Triangle-area EWB groups which included speakers from the World Bank and Rotary International. I also traveled to Ecuador to assist in data collection for a water supply project in a mountain village.

Optimize Climate-Controlled Sodium Hypochlorite Storage for Cost Savings and Improved Sustainability
- Proceedings of the North Carolina American Water Works Association Annual Conference
- December 2011
Authors: Ryan Kingsbury, Bill MarriottThis paper discusses how the most cost-effective level of climate control to prevent sodium hypochlorite decomposition was determined for the Brushy Creek Regional Water Treatment Plant (BCRWTP), a 17-million-gallon-per-day facility currently under construction in Cedar Park, Texas. Using an empirical equation relating the amount of sodium hypochlorite decay to the initial product concentration, temperature, and storage time, the number of annual chemical deliveries that would be needed for storage temperatures ranging from 60 to 85 °F was compared to the capital and operational costs
associated with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC).
Ultimately, the net present value (NPV) of
incremental chemical costs was found to equal the NPV of climate-control-associated costs at a storage temperature
of 70°F. The method outlined herein can easily be adapted to evaluate tradeoffs in life cycle costs, energy savings,
or carbon footprint associated with various operational practices related to sodium hypochlorite (e.g., onsite dilution versus use of a climate-controlled environment). Utilities contemplating conversion from chlorine gas to sodium hypochlorite can enhance the sustainability of their facilities by considering these impacts and taking steps to
minimize them.
