In the start up environment, the calendar year should be akin to that of a dog's year. It's easy to gain 7 years of knowledge in 1 year when your straddling countless tasks in varying fields of expertise. Having a diverse skillset and a willingness to tackle any task is crucial to surviving the start up.
Here is a scenario - your start up is planning a promotional event in New York. A venue needs to be secured, audio/video equipment procured, catering, travel and accommodations, media needs to be contacted, a buzz needs to be created, a demo/presentation needs to given in front of a large group, and the whole thing needs to be documented with photographs and presented afterward through your social media channels.
Sounds like a lot, and in the traditional corporate world these tasks would be delegated to several departments. In the start up world - the buck probably stops with at most two people. Not everyone can handle the multitasking involved. I can, and I have - countless times in multiple cities across the country in various capacities.
