IT WAS CLEAR TO Russell Glickman from the beginning that his son, Michael, 26, was going to be the master of his own fate—despite facing tremendous odds.

Deprived of oxygen before his birth, Michael was delivered at 25½ weeks and weighed just over 2 pounds. His brain was damaged and his lungs were underdeveloped. Three days after his son was born, Glickman and his wife, Anne, rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit at what is now MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. There, doctors told them that Michael’s oxygen levels were dropping precipitously and that he would likely die—the Glickmans needed to say goodbye....

What made you decide to get into your line of work?

I’ve been building things since I was a child. My grandfather was a builder, so he let me practice on blocks of wood. I began remodeling homes as a teenager and opened my business 38 years ago. In 1988, my son Mike was born prematurely and developed cerebral palsy. I had to retrofit my own home to meet my son’s needs. I became a specialist in improving the quality of life of individuals with mobility challenges like the disabled and elderly through innovative design solutions. We’re now a nationally recognized remodeling company featured in dozens of publications....

    MOBILITY ISSUES WAS PARAMOUNT.

The design team and construction crew incorporated undiscovered spaces to
expand and further the utility of the space. Incorporating numerous assistive
technology devices (disappearing pocket doors, ultra-light weight wheelchair,
electronic-activation faucets, anti-scald devices, barrier-free shower entrance, and
full-height body dryer), this bathroom makes the most of every square inch. Using
luxurious materials judiciously, the homeowners can enjoy an accessible bath that
improves their standard of living and quality of life. The bathroom is the opposite
of institutional or sterile; it is warm, inviting and incredibly functional. With its
variable lighting sequences, all on dimmers, it offers a varied ambiance, expansive
shower space with integrated seats, improved storage closets, a compact jetted tub,
and wide vanity countertop, enabling its users to experience signature amenities
    without expanding the room's footprint.

A family is tragically impacted by the father’s sudden death  Family life made easier by Glickman's experience with complex designing & remodeling challenges

A family is tragically impacted by the father’s sudden death. Our clients, a widowed mother and daughter lived in a one level apartment to better cope with the daughter’s severe physical disabilities due to cerebral palsy. Her father had been her principal caregiver, lifting and carrying his daughter from her bed to other locations. Obviously, the father’s death prompted an abrupt change in circumstances for the family. Our clients needed a functional space that facilitated as much independence for the daughter as possible. Transforming an 80’s sterile, bland master bath into a spacious, accessible retreat for clients that include a young adult with severe mobility issues was paramount. The designer and construction crew incorporated undiscovered spaces to expand and further the utility of the space. Incorporating numerous assistive technology devices (disappearing pocket doors, ultra-lightweight wheelchair, electronic-activation faucets, anti-scald devices, barrier-free shower entrance, and full-height body dryer), this bathroom makes the most of every square inch.
