Russell Gifford's Summary
I specialize in communication of information and ideas. In training, teaching, or business, successful communication leads to detailed understanding of the needs of the moment with an eye on future requirements. The goal is to get people to take the 'long view' and avoid the repetition of costly mistakes made through hurried fixes or poor planning.
Russell Gifford's Experience
Instructional Designer and Guest Instructor, Lifelong Learning
Educational Institution; 501-1000 employees; Higher Education industry
January 2004 – Present (10 years 9 months) Sioux City, Iowa Area
Multi-media presentations and seminars on subjects surrounding American History.
My tenth year with WIT included an incredibly successful 15 part examination of "The Great War: 1914-1918", a detailed look at the disaster that set the course for the 20th Century. The fall term followed the "Founding Fathers" from 1750 to 1800, through the Revolution, the Constitutional crisis, and the beginning of the new nation. Both series were funded by a generous grant from the Kind World Foundation. Other highly successful series during my past ten years include "Iowa During the American Civil War"; "Khrushchev in Iowa: 1959"; (both funded by Humanities Iowa grants); "Picturing America" (funded in part by a National Endowment for the Arts grant);"The Roots of the Civil Rights Movement"; "JFK and the Campaign that Changed America"; (Submitted for Iowa Lifelong Learning grant); "When the Walls Came Down: Examining the History and the Impact of the Berlin Wall"; and nearly 100 others.
Interactive delivery with extensive background provided by historical documents, my 20th century programs include use of period media as well. The goal is to shine a light on areas of history that continue to shape America today, and to get the participant to view it as the people of the time saw events unfold. When we understand why particular decisions were made, and the results, we can truly judge what the options were.

October 2012 – May 2014 (1 year 8 months) Omaha, NE
As a catalyst for change, I leverage my computer skills via my training abilities to move the organization from 'fixing things that break' toward a concept of 'anticipating problems.' The goal - to solve them before the issue manifests as 'broken' and how to train these new skills. Successes included reducing failures in the reporting services by nearly 50%. Projects included troubleshooting, then replacing a problematic reporting situation and the migration of Crystal Reports to a new platform with minimal client disruption.
