R. Timothy Brady’s Summary

R. Timothy Brady is a composer, documentary film producer, and activist. He has studied with Steve Everett, John Anthony Lennon, Sonia Possetti in Buenos Aires, and Michael White at the Juilliard School in New York, but his earliest musical training consisted of songwriting lessons from a local country singer. When he first approached classical composition as a student at Emory University, it was from a background in the vernacular, as performer, improviser, and electronic musician.

He graduated with honors from Emory, where writing an original score for Tim Robbins’ stage production-in-progress of Dead Man Walking combined Brady’s passions for music and for political advocacy. In 2004 he received the Edwin J. Brown Scholarship to study social problems in his hometown, and in 2007, he founded Soulbird, Inc. Soulbird continues to provide arts and human rights development internationally, including Iraq and the Horn of Africa. From 2004-2007, Brady performed with the band One Hand Loves the Other, which he co-founded with front man Lou Rodriguez, sharing the stage with such acts as Final Fantasy; in 2007, the band released their debut album [Stickfigure Records], in which he composed and arranged.

Also in 2007, Brady presented his first opera, Edalat Square, at the inaugural Opera Vista Festival in Houston, where it shared first prize. Dramatizing the 2005 execution of two young Iranians, Edalat was a success with audiences and critics alike (the Houston Press dubbed it “poignant, highly poetic” and Brady “the composer to watch”). National Public Radio in America and Swedish Public Radio have both broadcast excerpts from the opera. Edalat will receive its Philadelphia premiere in 2010.

Most recently, Brady traveled to northern Iraq last August to teach a workshop and present a concert on new music, in partnership with the Kurdish Music & Heritage Establishment, for 15 students from the northern provinces.
