I am working toward a doctorate in history, which involves periodic research travel to Basel, Switzerland.
Long-term project: A book on the history of Brewton, Alabama, an easily overlooked but intriguing little city on Murder Creek. Brewton might deserve to be called the HQ of efforts to revive the native longleaf pine forests of the coastal South.
Closer to home, I'm studying the causes of the Creek War of 1813-1814 in Alabama, which devastated the Creek Nation and vaulted Andrew Jackson to national fame. I also look forward to the bicentennial of the War of 1812 (2012-2015), an opportunity for encouraging Americans to learn a little more about their past.
Before all this: I was a journalist from 1988 to 1992, then got into teaching college students and adults. I was in computer support positions for several years, overlapping with my teaching career. I worked one year for a non-profit advocacy group. I'm now focused on a career in higher education and historical research.
