Rory Bowman's Experience
January 2014 – Present (10 months)
Sophists were the consultants of classical Greece, providing subject-matter expertise and general counsel across a variety of topics to best meet the needs of their clients. After shutting down Thrasymachus Corporation in August, I am currently working as a sole proprietor with a few of my former consulting clients and taking on other temporary and short-term projects as I work on a sabbatical of study and service for 2014.
Nonprofit; 201-500 employees; Professional Training & Coaching industry
August 2012 – December 2013 (1 year 5 months) Portland, Oregon Area
Executive director for a fifteen-year-old nonprofit with primary responsibility for six-figure annual budget and all operations during major restructuring. Co-created and streamlined a centralized communication plan with regular status meetings. Used "lean" principles to narrow focus on fundamental tasks and "open book" techniques to simplify and convey budget process more cleanly. Helped reduce personnel expenses by nearly half, mobilizing dozens of volunteer staff, coordinated across two states. Was part of a dynamic outreach team, whose volunteers tripled the number of outreach events to completely fill almost all of our flagship trainings while shepherding the organization toward final merger into a larger, national structure.
August 1998 – August 2013 (15 years 1 month)
Founded own business as a contract technical writer in 1998, just as release of the iMac and OS X created opportunities for someone with Macintosh and Unix experience. Changed company name from RoryBowman.com to MacRory.com, then incorporated in 2003 as Thrasymachus Corporation to bring on employees and function as a small-business incubator. Specializing in integration of systems for non-profits, individuals, small and micro-businesses, my primary job was to serve as IT department and small business advisor to people using Mac OS computers. I helped make sure that hardware, software, people and business processes all worked together to increase pleasure, decrease frustration and improve productivity.
Unhappy with changes in the direction of the industry, I gave one year's notice and chose to shut down my corporation fifteen years to the day after my first business license, having supported thousands of users at hundreds of locations. In all that time I never lied to or hurt anyone for money, and never turned anyone away for inability to pay. It was an honor to have served and had the trust of so many kind and interesting people.
Vancouver School District
August 1996 – August 1998 (2 years 1 month)
Sixth-grade teacher at Gaiser Middle School, team-teaching standard sixth grade one year and in the Challenge program for gifted and talented students. 1991 – June 1996 (5 years)
Worked as dispatcher then as Community Safety Officer within security department for a residential, private liberal arts college. Obtained a degree in criminal justice as I trained for a supervisory position, including work as crime prevention officer and bringing department into compliance with national Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act (now known as the Clery Act).
Educational Institution; 201-500 employees; Primary/Secondary Education industry
