I successfully downsized my career in 2005 when I took a two-year "sabbatical" and with my wife and daughter traveled 10,000 miles in our small sailboat. Now I am back at the University and happy to say that I have a small office that I share, no one reporting to me, no budgetary responsibility and a much better life. Sometimes it's good to be the one who makes the rules, and sometimes it's good to be the one who can say, "Hey, I just work here."
technical tutorials, interface between technical IT and end users, ability to fly a hang glider or landscape a front yard.
(Computer Software industry)
July 2009 — Present (5 months)
With my partner Jim Bowman, I formed PC Liferaft LLC in July of 2009. We specialize in proactive technology support, i.e., finding the root causes of issues and helping our clients prevent those and other problems in the future. We keep our overhead low (and work regular jobs to pay the bills) which means our rates are well below what others charge for this level of technical support.

2000 — 2005 (5 years )
Management of computer help desk, student computer labs, and media resources department with far too many people reporting to me. Left UTC in October 2005 to sail the Caribbean for a while (see http://www.stationr.org).

November 1997 — June 2000 (2 years 8 months)
Manager of computer Help Desk with responsbility for overall coordination of technology support for the campus. Had a big office and a job I took very seriously, working 60-70 hours week to rebuild technology support at UTC. I look back on this period of time and am amazed at how much we accomplished.
(Education Management industry)
April 1986 — November 1987 (1 year 8 months)
Set up and managed public computers and a classroom of 24 computers in the Environmental Learning Lab. Worked with educators to develop programs for Aquarium visitors. Developed databases, websites; developed and taught week-long "webmaster" summer program for kids. Supported technology in local schools, including developing and teaching 21st Century Classroom program for K-12 teachers. I enjoyed working at the Aquarium and left only because I thought (erroneously) that I should pursue greater management responsibilities.
1979 — 1983
Sailing, caving, hang gliding, SCUBA, backpacking
