Kraft Foods' recent acquisition of British confectionary legend Cadbury plc — a mega-merger worth some US$19.6 billion — is notable for many reasons, not the least of which is the questions it raises about one of the most interesting supply chain issues today. The question is how corporate social responsibility (CSR) and environmental sustainability will be treated by the acquirer (in this case, U.S.-based Kraft) and the acquiree (Cadbury) during the acquisition and in the combined businesses after full integration. Here we have two international companies with potentially differing views of and approaches to CSR and sustainability. Just how might this play out on the corporate level and from a supply management perspective? And, perhaps most important, how can both companies preserve the best of their CSR- and sustainability-related goals, efforts and achievements?
