I am a master student in Computer Science (Media and Knowledge Engineering) at Delft University of Technology. I have over 4.5 years of work experience as Software Developer at Floorplanner.com, where I work in a multidisciplinary team and learned to get things done in a fast and efficient way.
I am very interested in Artificial Intelligence, especially Evolutionary Computing and Swarm Intelligence which I intend to use in my graduation project. Other interests include, politics, philosophy and snowboarding.
Java, ActionScript, Flash
(Privately Held; Internet industry)
November 2004 — Present (5 years 1 month)
Floorplanner.com is an online house drawing tool, it enables you to draw and plan your house without installing any additional software. My expertise within the Floorplanner team lies in the core part of the application, I work on features of the Flash based drawing tool. At Floorplanner I collaborate with a creative team of programmers and designers from various backgrounds. I work here part time, for about 40 hours a month, and in this function I mainly use ActionScript and Flash.

March 2009 — August 2009 (6 months)
Working on the ekgemist.nl project of the Information and Communication Theory Group. This project aims to create a website where visitors can view a personalized summary of a soccer match. My task is to design the user interaction by creating a prototype and doing user tests with this prototype.

November 2004 — November 2007 (3 years 1 month)
This is the preceding company of Floorplanner.com. Most of my time I worked on Floorplanner.com (the website/tool), but I also worked on several other projects such as a neighborhood planning tool and on a website were it was made easy to create split screen videos together.
Master , Media & Knowledge Engineering , 2008 — 2010 (expected)
The courses I followed which I find most interesting and which I think give a good indication of the contents of my master are:
- Artificial Intelligence Techniques
- Pattern Recognition
- Machine Learning
- Speech Recognition
- Neural Networks
What I find most interesting is to take some concept from nature (e.g. evolution or the human brain) and try to apply this as a technique in a computer program.
For my graduation I plan to use techniques I learned at these courses to solve a problem in speech recognition, natural language processing, robotics, or any other topic which I haven't discovered yet.
Also see my education at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for a full overview of my master program.
Master (additional courses) , Artificial Intelligence , 2008 — 2010 (expected)
I followed two courses in Amsterdam for my free electives in my master program at Delft University of Technology:
- Evolutionary Computing by Prof.dr. A.E. Eiben (using
Darwin’s evolution theory as a problem solver)
- Advanced Selforganisation by Dr. M.C. Schut (using
strategies used by ants, bees and so on to solve algorithmic problems)
Bachelor , Computer Science: Media and Knowledge Engineering , 2004 — 2008
Media and Knowledge Engineering is a branch of Computer Science related to Human Computer Interaction, Computer Graphics, Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence.
Some of the projects I participated in:
• A robot with vision, it could recognize objects using a webcam and navigate towards them.
• A 3d computer game using an existing 3D engine.
• Facial recognition software using various AI techniques.
• A Windows Mobile application which helped users (youngsters) to find something nice to do, the application was able
to give suggestions based on the user's preference profile, his friends and his location.
• In my Bachelor final project I created a specialized search engine for furniture and other physical objects on the web.
We had to create our own web-crawler for this, which is able to crawl an entire region of the internet to store all furniture
related pages in to our own database, which we made searchable through a set of functions in a public API.
Anwärter , Snowboarding , 2006 — 2006
Anwärter is a German title which translates as “Candidate”, with this title I'm allowed to teach beginners how to snowboard.
At this education I learned how to teach people who had never been in the snow to become an intermediate snowboarder. Two main things I learned here are to snowboard technically very good, and to teach other people something in a fun and enthusiastic way.
Propedeuse , Technical Computer Science , 2003 — 2004
Higher education, Computer Science. Main subjects:
• Mathematics
• Software Engineering
• System & Network Engineering
• Project based learning
